The situation

Robin A. Gillette had a book coming, Grief is a Hurricane, a collection of poems written after losing her husband and father within five months of each other. The book needed a home before it launched, and so did Robin. Neither existed yet. This was a fresh brand from the ground up, not a redesign. Robin needed a visual identity that could hold something as tender as grief without flattening it into a generic “self-help author” look, and a website that could introduce her, her story, and her book to readers who were often arriving in the middle of their own loss. The brand also needed to live beyond the screen. Robin wanted physical touchpoints, stickers, bookmarks, and pins, that readers could hold onto, the same way her poems ask people to hold onto their grief rather than rush past it.

What I did

I built Robin’s brand and website from scratch, starting with a logo and visual identity that felt warm and literary rather than clinical or overly soft. Every design choice was made to hold space for grief as something lived-in and ongoing, not a problem to be solved.

The website was structured around Robin’s central idea, the Hurricane paradigm, giving it its own dedicated space to be explained and explored, alongside her personal story, the book itself, and the ways people can connect with her: the Online Writer’s Café, speaking engagements, and workshops. A free guide, 5 Gentle Ways to Begin Your Morning After Loss, was built in as a low-pressure first step for readers not yet ready to buy the book.

Beyond the site, I designed a set of branded materials to extend the identity into the physical world, stickers, bookmarks, and pins, so Robin had a cohesive brand to bring to readings, events, and pre-order campaigns, not just a website living in isolation.

The result

Robin now has a complete brand, in print and online, built to meet grieving readers gently rather than sell to them. The website gives Grief is a Hurricane a home ahead of its release, while the Hurricane paradigm, her story, and ways to connect all live in one considered space instead of being scattered across platforms. The branded materials mean that same warmth travels with her to every event and conversation about the book.
